Image description: Every winter the ice in the Arctic Ocean grows, and every summer it melts and shrinks. This summer, it melted to its second smallest size, shown here in this image from NASA. The yellow line shows the average size for Arctic ice in the summer. The red line shows that the ice melt created a Northwest Passage shipping lane. According to Joey Comiso, senior scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, “The sea ice is not only declining, the pace of the decline is becoming more drastic.”
